Overview

What is AVSL?

AVSL is the main interclub athletics competition in Victoria across summer. It includes a broad program of events such as sprints, middle- and long-distance running, walks, jumps, throws and relays, giving athletes multiple ways to compete across the season.

Across each round, athletes represent their club and contribute to the club’s standings. AVSL combines individual performance with club-based competition, so members can focus on personal progress whilst also helping MPAC on the ladder.

AVSL Season Structure

The AVSL summer season runs from October to February and is built around 10 rounds, with a reserve round scheduled for contingencies. Athletes enter events, compete at their allocated venue and score for their club.

Rounds are held across metro and regional zones and entry windows open in stages. Home-zone priority opens first, then entries open more broadly across zones before final entry close. Always check the current round page for exact timing and venue updates.

How AVSL Works

Track & Field Events

Within AVSL meets, athletes can enter running events (sprints and distance), jumps, throws and relays. This format allows athletes to specialise in one area or compete across multiple disciplines throughout the season.

Round Structure

AVSL runs across 10 rounds in a season. Athletes compete for points for their club, whilst also gaining invaluable regular competition experience.

Track Heats & Field Groups

Heats on the track are grouped by athlete performance rather than age group to allow athletes to compete against other athletes with similar ability. Athlete ages are used exclusively for scoring purposes with the exception of Hurdles and Steeplechase, where hurdle and steeple heights are set based on age group.

Field events are mixed events and run on a first-in-first-served basis for each group. Athlete ages are again used exclusively for scoring with the exception of implement weights in throws events.

Points & Gradings

AVSL links points, grading, and divisions into one club-based competition. Individual performances are converted into points using a performance scale, allowing results from different events to contribute to a single club score each round. Scoring is based on a limited number of results per athlete (up to three individual events, plus a relay when held), and results and scoring tools are available through AV’s ResultsHub.

Clubs compete within five graded divisions, with ladder positions determined by accumulated round-by-round points. Those division ladders decide premiership outcomes and can drive promotion and relegation between divisions, making consistency across the season important for overall club results.

MPAC in AVSL

When you enter AVSL as an MPAC athlete, your results contribute to MPAC’s round and season standings. AVSL is both an individual performance pathway and a club competition, so every event entered can add value to the club across the year, plus provide a great opportunity to refine your competition strategies.
