Each year, MPAC travels to the iconic Falls Creek for a high-altitude training camp focused on quality training, shared routines, and club connection.
Overview
The Falls Creek Training Camp is MPAC’s annual summer trip, where members stay together at altitude in a shared lodge for up to two weeks.
While training is a key focus, the camp is equally about connection and community. Days are built around group sessions, shared meals, recovery sessions and relaxed evenings at the lodge.
A highlight of the camp is access to some of Falls Creek’s most iconic running routes.
Sessions and runs make use of Falls Creek’s established training areas, which have been used by club runners, state squads and elite athletes for decades. These routes offer a mix of sustained climbs, rolling terrain and flatter paths, making them suitable for both structured training sessions and relaxed aerobic runs.
A steady climbing route commonly used for aerobic strength and controlled efforts
Longer alpine runs ideal for endurance and mileage
Flatter, scenic paths often used for easy runs, recovery days or extended aerobic running
Sustained climbs used for hill sessions, strength work and tempo-style efforts
Outside of training, Falls Creek offers plenty of ways to relax and recover. Many athletes enjoy cold water plunges in the aqueduct pools or swimming and paddle boarding in nearby alpine lakes such as Rocky Valley Lake and Pretty Valley Lake.
The village also provides access to gym facilities, tennis courts, cafés and a network of mountain bike trails, making it easy to unwind, cross-train or spend time with friends and family.

Falls Creek has been a centre for Australian distance running and endurance sport for several decades. Its elevation (approximately 1,600–1,850m), cooler summer climate and extensive network of trails and roads makes it a natural training base for endurance athletes.
While elite athletes continue to use Falls Creek for altitude adaptation and performance gains, its role has broadened. Today, it is just as valued for its focused environment, shared training experience and a chance to be a part of the continuing tradition of Australian distance running culture.

While the Falls Creek trip is a training camp, there is ample downtime to relax in the lodge’s communal areas or enjoy what the region has to offer. From mountain bike trails and alpine lakes to rivers and walking tracks, there are plenty of options to fill the day, either as a group or independently.
A typical day at camp involves:
Morning: Group run or structured session
Late morning: Breakfast and recovery
Midday to afternoon: Relaxation and recovery, hiking, swimming, cycling, or (for some) a second run
Evening: Shared dinner and relaxed time in the lodge’s communal spaces
